Ask the experts: Parking and cards ...

How can campus card administrators make a difference in the crucial campus service issue of parking?

Mark Reinart, Manager Marketing Systems and Development, Diebold
Providing comprehensive systems with a full suite of integrated applications provides end users the growth path and long system life cycle they should expect from their investment. Reducing the need to purchase application specific software and servers from multiple vendors is a key benefit of CS Gold. Campus systems administrators simply turn on the applications necessary to solve requirements, like parking or door access, without concern for separate databases, training or support.

Jeff Zander, VP, General Meters Corp.
With our Parking Module, expensive garages can be avoided. Instead simple fencing with electronic gates can control/restrict access when coupled with an electronic card reader and on line network. The system is an easy add-on for most campuses using our campus card systems.

Angelina Lopez, Media Relations, HID Corp.
One way to address the issue of limited facilities is to increase garage occupancy by better routing the parkers. This can be obtained though the deployment of an Automated Vehicle Identification (AVI) system in parking. Such a system will allow the campus operator to automatically separate and track frequent parkers by assigning them exclusive access to particular garages or areas in which to park.  These assignments can be made dynamically based on things like class schedule, working hours, location of classes or jobs on campus. By knowing more about actual occupancy in real time, the campus parking operator will be able to much better utilize the existing infrastructure. In addition, an existing HID Prox campus card can be used as a parking permit as a part of such a system to quickly facilitate payment, entry and egress in the parking structure.

Ann E. Johnson, Marketing Manager, Indala
Indala’s active Cotag cards and tags, along with the Cotag HF500 (indoor use) or HF100 (outdoor use) reader, deliver unrivalled performance to automate and speed the flow of personnel into parking facilities for convenient, yet secure entry.   Unlike passive cards, Cotag active cards, along with the HF500/100, provide a read range of up to one meter, ideal for parking applications.  In many cases, the driver will not have to open the vehicle window or door, fumble for a passive card or swipe a card  through a magstripe reader.  Rather, the active card is read automatically at access control points within one meter of the vehicle–for truly hands-free access.
