Killeen, Texas’ Central Texas College is using Biometric Signature ID’s biometric identification software, BioSig-ID, to verify some 50,000 students for online courses and boost the overall security of online logins.

Online coursework is commonplace at universities across the country, with students flocking to the digital classroom in significant numbers. With this trend comes a new wrinkle to academic dishonesty and a new challenge for universities. One of the online course monitoring systems now available is being offered by ProctorU, a company that’s using webcams and keystroke biometrics to verify students’ identities for online coursework, with the hopes of mitigating academic dishonesty and fraud.

As more and more college courses go online in lieu of the traditional classroom setting, the need to properly and effectively verify students’ identity online has become a vital concern. It seems that biometrics may provide a solution to vetting student identities online.

Colleges are increasingly developing strategies to ensure that the student who gets the grade for taking an online course is the same person who does the homework and completes the exams, according to biosig-id.com.
