The University of Minnesota Police are investigating an alleged scam where a group of individuals fraudulently registered as students to get a campus U Card, which allowed them to make large credit-like purchases, according to a local newspaper.
The main suspect allegedly recruited several individuals to register for the same class at the University’s College of Continuing Education. After receiving the U Cards, the suspects purchased several thousand dollars of merchandise at the campus’ bookstore.
After purchasing the expensive items, the individuals would tried to sell them for cash.
The university has released a statement in response to the incident:
“We’ve taken the necessary steps to stop this, and there is nothing to indicate this is anything more than an isolated incident. However, we will be fully reviewing all of the security protocols in place with regards to the issuance of U Cards to see if there are places for improvements.”
