The University of Alberta’s campus card office is using the wiki to disseminate information amongst its employees; a method that Marsha Amanova, program supervisor at the university, feels is an underutilized and underrated communication tool.
Amanova and the school are using Wikis in the school’s campus card office to help ensure that a student-based, part-time staff has constant access to important information.
Change is a concept all too familiar to Amanova and the campus card office, citing specifically the oft-fluctuating ID and policy operations. With procedural changes abound, Amanova is faced with the need to efficiently and effectively communicate pertinent information to her staff: enter the wiki.
In addition to policy and procedural changes, Amanova explains that personnel fluctuates as well–graduation, part-time schedules, etc.–so keeping everyone informed at all time is paramount.
The Wiki offers a simple, cost-effective solution. A web-based, editable, not static, collaborative and most importantly searchable tool, the Wiki allows for flexible access to information that can be altered in real time.
Wikis are good for documentation, building a knowledge base, training and project management.
