Southern Methodist University still uses mag-stripe ID cards for physical access but at least one student is pushing for contactless technology, according to a column in The Daily Campus.
“Contactless ID cards prove themselves as they can be used without being removed from a wallet. A simple wave of your wallet over the scanner will accomplish the same deed as removing and sliding your card,” the columnist states.
The columnist states that long lines waiting for dorm access will shrink as well as queues at the parking garage. Though the student also states that RFID mounts for cars would simplify the garage process.
Near field communication is mentioned as a possible solution as well but since the handsets are not widespread, it’s a solution that will have to wait.
