The Student Government Association at Towson University in Maryland is re-issuing student discount cards that provide savings at a variety of local businesses.
“They were so effective that when [SGA President] Brandy Hall and I were first putting together this year’s SGA budget, she made sure that we set aside some money to be used for the cards,” said SGA Treasurer Ben Mendelsohn. “Both of us were in SGA last year and passed out a great number of cards. I saw many eyes light up when they found out that they could use this card an unlimited number of times to save money on their favorite foods.”
The SGA produced the cards through collegediscountcards.com, which provides discount cards to colleges throughout the U.S. The company lines up the businesses in the area and negotiates a deal. Mendelsohn said 23 partnerships were secured last year.
“The cards allow us to help students save money. With all of the costs that being a university student brings, it is nice to give some relief to students, even if it is only a few dollars at a time,” he added. “Ultimately, the card’s success is up to the local restaurant’s willingness to join. We were able to get a lot and hopefully we’ll be able to get more now that people have seen how successful it has been.”
