Gemplus delivers secure SIM-based digital signature solution for SFR s Wireless PKI Commercial Pilot

CampusIDNews Staff   ||   Jan 01, 2003  ||   , ,

Gemplus (Paris Euronext: Euroclear 5768 and NASDAQ: GEMP), the world’s leading provider of smart card-enabled solutions, announces the delivery of a complete and secure SIM-based mobile commerce solution to SFR, the second largest operator in France.

SFR s Wireless PKI commercial pilot, SECURISIGN - digital signature via a mobile phone,, enables subscribers to purchase products and services from SFR merchant partners (Interflora, Allocine, etc.) and take part in lottery programs to win vouchers. Launched in November 2002, this pilot allows SFR selected subscribers to pay for purchases without transmitting their credit card details over the network and receive an electronic receipt as proof of purchase. For retailers, SECURISIGN enhances distribution channels (voice and Web) for their goods and services. They also benefit from a receipt of purchase that ensures payment from customers. The SECURISIGN solution was achieved due to the strong collaboration of leaders in their respective fields: Gemplus, Atos Origin, the international information technology service provider, and Baltimore Technologies, global leader in e-security products, services and solutions.

Atos Origin, coordinator of the consortium, was the supplier of the mSign interface, integrator and provider of the hosted signature and payment solutions. Baltimore Technologies provided its leading wireless PKI software, Telepathy, enabling the enhanced security of digital certificates and public key cryptography to be integrated.

Gemplus provided “state of the art” technology from the SIM PKI signature application and Java SIM cards (GemXploreTM Xpresso 64K PK) to the transaction gateways (GemConnect OTA and GemConnect On-line) and signature validation gateway (e-verifier). Gemplus also provided integration services and hosting of the OTA and S@T gateways in its own premises (part of GemServices, Gemplus Operated Services offer).

The Gemplus full range of products and services plays a significant role within the m-commerce value chain: the transaction gateways (OTA and S@t) provide an easy and flexible way to manage the order process between the retailer and the end-user. The retailer is able to send a summary of the order to the user who then validates the transaction by generating a secure and personal digital signature (with a private code) from the SIM. This is then verified by the e-verifier signature verification gateway. The inherent levels of security within the SIM lend weight to the electronic signature, thus providing a vital link in the global transaction process. The GemXplore Xpresso Java SIM cards are certified CC EAL5+, which is the highest level of security ever received by a SIM card.

Philippe Vallee, President of the Telecom Business Unit, said, “This project is in line with our strategy for the Telecom industry as a whole. The connection of the SIM to Server Side Software using Over The Air and S@T technology means that operators are in a strong position to offer dynamic 3rd party content and services to their subscribers. Providing this framework and hosting the services ourselves means that operators are free to concentrate on their core business safe in the knowledge that best of breed partners are taking care of their subscribers mobile commerce needs”.
