Dartmouth Dining Services has deployed a new food truck project as part of the college’s transition to the new house community. The food truck will begin serving late night Monday through Thursday from the hours of 10:00 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.
Per a report from student publication, The Dartmouth, menu items include a variety of late-night fare including sliders, fries, brownies, churros and cheese fritters, and will accept payments via declining balance accounts, meal swipes or standard credit/debit cards. The truck is intended to act as a mobile kitchen that will serve as a food hub for Dartmouth’s campus housing communities.
Dartmouth’s housing communities planners wanted to implement a food-service element, but logistical limitations made the deployment of a food truck the best option. Dartmouth’s dining services reportedly looked to university peers for inspiration and spoke with several other institutions that operate food trucks on campus, including the University of Connecticut and the University of Massachusetts.
Dartmouth’s truck will make two stops per night, among a total of seven stops located across the housing communities. The truck will staff four personnel, including a manager, and will be run initially by the campus’ current staff of the Courtyard Café. That location will close earlier each night to accommodate the new food truck schedule. In addition to its regular menu, the truck will also serve weekly specials that intend to feature locally sourced and seasonal ingredients.
Dining services also plans to gather a marketing team of student employees to leverage social media outlets like Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat to promote daily specials and announce any changes in truck locations.
There are also plans to station the truck at highly trafficked student locations like sporting events, as well as offering catering options for student groups. Dartmouth joins a growing roster of campuses, including Virginia Tech, that are deploying food trucks to both meet evolving food-service needs and provide more variety.
