Ask most administrators who the face of their campus card is, and the answer will most likely be the students. This is literally the case at Cincinnati University, where the Bearcat Card is need of a new student likeness for its promotional materials.
As reported by The News Recorder, Cincinnati’s student newspaper, the current face of the Bearcat Card is Katone Roberts. His face appears on all campus card promotions or when the ID card appears publicly.
According to the university, the first person to be featured on Cincinnati’s campus card promotional materials wasn’t a Cincinnati student at all, and that photo was simply used to show the format and design of the ID card. Moreover, the name on the card changed numerous times, but the picture remained.
Stock photos are a thing of the past, however, after Roberts was selected to be the face of the current Bearcat Card. Roberts won the honor following his entry in a university-run competition wherein interested students tweeted an inspiring message to Cincinnati’s Twitter account — the winner’s name and face would then be used on ID card promotional materials.
Now that Roberts has stepped down from his place on the campus card, Cincinnati will for the second time select a student to be featured on the ID. The idea is for a new student to be featured each year, giving students an opportunity to recognize one of their own in university marketing efforts as well highlighting the diversity of students on campus.
The competition for the next face of the campus card isn’t without its perks, either. The winning entry received a $100 prize deposited on their Bearcat card, will be featured on the university’s website, will be named grand marshal of MainStreet Stride — a university-sponsored parade — and will appear on all promotional materials for the Bearcat Card.
Submissions for the new Face of the Bearcat Card were accepted between March 23 and April 1. Entrants used the hashtag #BearcatCard, and in 140 characters or less, described how they exemplify the spirit of the Cincinnati community and upheld the university’s principles.
With university card offices nationwide striving to find new and innovative ways to market the valuable services that the campus card provides, Cincinnati’s student competition certainly ranks as a great idea. This marks a great way to engage the student body, foster interest in the university’s social media accounts and reward those students who want to be involved on campus.
