The modern credential has evolved significantly over time and as advancements in technologies are made so too do advancements in security.
Robert Lemley, director of Software Development as CBORD, sheds some light on the history of the modern credential detailing the pros and cons of the various methods of authentication ranging from the barcode to the latest smart card offerings.
With a number of smart card options currently on the market, deciphering the differences between the solutions becomes a tricky proposition. As Lemley explains, diversification is the key to secure smart card implementation.
“Diversification means that every card has a different key in it, derived from the card serial number,” Lemley explains. “If there is only one key for the entire card population, if a hacker deciphers the key the entire population is compromised.”
Key diversifications along with new card standards–ISO14443A, ISO14443B and ISO15693–have effectively take smart card credentials to a new level of security, efficiency and utility.
