BYU students’ information released accidentally
Personal information of 1,300 international students at Brigham Young University, Provo, Utah, has been accidentally released by email. The information included the students’ names, email addresses, phone numbers and student ID numbers and was sent to each of the 1,300 students advising them of a career workshop.
Karen Evans, coordinator of the University Advisement Center, said students were notified as soon as the error was made. “We are extremely apologetic. We realize it shouldn’t have happened and we have done everything to prevent it from happening in the future,” she said.
She said the only information not publicly available already is the student’s ID number, which, isn’t very valuable. However, at least one student disagrees.
Senior Raheel Aslam said there are several things the BYU ID number can be used for without entering a student’s password. For example, students printing things on campus simply have to put in their ID number and their account is charged for the number of copies they make. He also says students employed by BYU use that number to clock in and out.
