New York’s Saratoga Springs School District is issuing new bus cards to students that will help monitor arrivals and departures from bus stops and campuses. The RFID cards will help enable parents to check in real-time if their child has boarded the correct bus and was dropped off at school premises.

The University Grants Commission — a government body designed to maintain higher education standards in India — mandated a shift from the pen and paper attendance tracking to a more efficient and effective method. Two years on, area colleges are issuing RFID credentials and experimenting with biometric systems to better log attendance and deter students from skipping class.

Located in rural India, the Kolhan University system will issue new RFID cards to its students, with the change officially beginning with the start of the coming academic term. All new incoming students to the university’s system of campuses will be issued the multi-purpose cards. The credentials are designed for use as the student’s ID, library card and fee card, and the initiative is part of the college’s new management information system.

Houston’s Cypress Fairbanks Independent School District can now notify parents when their students arrive and depart on buses, as well as process school cafeteria lines more quickly and efficiently with the implementation of a new, district-wide RFID card system.

A new mobile ID system is being implemented for Nigerian students in an effort to improve exam validation processes and cut down on identity fraud. The West African Examinations Council is spearheading the project along with HID Global who has provided contactless smart cards to more than 2.2 million Nigerian students enrolled in the testing program.

Australia’s Bunbury Catholic College has opted to install wireless RFID locks from SALTO systems at its new campus. Bunbury opted for the SALTO AMOK electronic escutcheons for its classrooms and facilities, in part, because they can be quickly locked down during a security or emergency situation.

RFID still has a place in K-12 environments, and at Westmoreland Intermediate Crossroads School, RFID pendants are being used to keep school personnel safe. WIU provides education for persistently disruptive students, and RFID pendants are giving teachers the ability to call for on-campus assistance to help de-escalate disruptive or violent situations.
