Washington DC's transit card 'suffers' from tremendous success
It seems that the Smarttrip contactless fare collection card is selling so quickly that the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Agency (WMATA) is nearly out of cards and may not get a new shipment in time. Since cards were mandated for use in many parking facilities and new card selling vending machines were installed, sales have jumped from 8,000 per month to 4,000 per day. The next significant shipment from card supplier-Cubic is not expected until mid-August. Though this could be inconvenient for some customers, it sound like a pretty good problem to face.
