American Express, CardSmith deploys prepaid ID card at University of North Florida

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

American Express announced the launch of the University of North Florida’s (UNF) Osprey 1Card, with American Express prepaid functionality embedded in the card.

Earlier this year, American Express announced a partnership with campus card service provider CardSmith. The Osprey 1Card is powered by CardSmith’s campus solution services.

The reloadable prepaid card allows students their ID card for on campus dining meal purchases and off campus at the locations nearby and around the world that accept American Express Cards. Students can reload funds via bank account or cash loading via Money Pak.

Student card members can view real-time transaction history and monitor spending, receive email or text alerts about low funds, when a transaction has occurred, or when funds have been loaded on the card, check card balance and schedule automatic reloading of funds. Future options are said to include loading via financial aid disbursement and direct deposit.

There are no fees for monthly maintenance, activation, balance inquiries, alerts, or foreign currency conversion. The funds on the card never expire, and if lost or stolen, the funds can be replaced. The first monthly ATM cash withdrawal is free, after which a $2.00 fee applies, and card replacement fees apply from the University after the initial card is issued. [end]

Tallahassee-based Florida A&M University and campus card service provider CardSmith have announced plans to upgrade the university’s multi-functional Rattler Card program.

The new Rattler Card will feature Rattler Bucks, a prepaid spending account offering FAMU’s more than 13,000 students cashless access to an expanded range of campus facilities and services including the bookstore, dining venues, mobile payments, campus offices and off-campus merchants.
