Ohio campus ID rewards students’ good behavior, speeds the lunch line

Tuesday, September 6, 2011

Dayton Public Schools, Ohio, has implemented a new student ID program to keep track of student attendance and award points for good behavior, among other things, according to Dayton Daily News.

The system keeps track of student data from attendance to detentions. Students collect points towards a monthly pizza party. Handheld scanners throughout the school allow staff to retrieve student information by simply scanning their ID card.

A tardy pass can be issued on the spot and the system keeps track of how many times the student has been late which enables punishments to be carried out swiftly. When students arrive for detention, their IDs are once again scanned so they can be counted as having attended.

The new system also cuts down on the long lunch lines. Students are no longer required to remember and type in their student ID number. They simply present their student ID which a staff member then scans. The ID system is also being employed to track library book checkouts.

Fingerprint technology acquired for Licking Heights’ five schools in Pataskala, Ohio, is aimed at moving students through lunch lines faster, along with reducing errors.

The fingerprint scanner from identiMetrics will require students to use their fingerprints to pull up accounts as they proceed through the lunch line. Currently they punch in student ID numbers onto a key pad. The system will go into effect next school year.
