El Paso school district plagued by group of hackers

The El Paso Independent School District (EPISD) could have compromised the personal information of nearly 7,000 students, reports a local news channel.

An online group of hackers, calling themselves the Host Bustorz, claimed to have hacked into the school district’s database and now have access to the names, ethnicities, student ID numbers and Social Security Numbers of nearly 7,000 students.


Experts consider the hack to be legitimate. EPISD released a statement saying that they are aware of the problem and will be sending out more information as it becomes available.

Minneapolis-based software developer NetProf has launched a centralized management software system that supports full identity management and user provisioning.

Called OmnID, its goal is to help educational administrators maintain accurate student data systems that provide user identification, systems access, security and ease-of-management.

The Lee County School District in southwest Florida is the latest to experiment with palm scanners in an effort to move the lunch line along faster. Students currently have to key in their ID number. If they make a mistake, it can slow down the line.

A high school in Tarpon Springs, Fla. recently sent out a mass email bearing student Social Security numbers. The school’s guidance counselor sent the email to Tarpon’s entire senior class of about 400 students and parents regarding the Bright Futures Scholarship program.

In an effort to provide better security at the school, students and staff at Lakewood High School in New Jersey are now wearing ID badges at all times while on campus. In addition, they also must pass through metal detectors when entering school grounds.
