School bus implements smart cards for student safety, Dubai

Monday, July 19, 2010

A Dubai school bus operator is planning the installation of a smart card system to improve the safety of some 40,000 students traveling to and from school every day.

Approximately 800 of School Transport Services’ buses will be equipped with smart card readers, accompanied by GPS tracking software, to enable students to log on and log off the buses each day.

Officials say the system will alert the proper personnel in the event of a child not logging off the bus, and will also provide schools with information in case of traffic delays or accidents.

ML Augustine, managing director of STS told the paper, “We will immediately know if a child has not got out of the bus, maybe because he fell asleep. We can also monitor speed and harsh braking.”
