When representatives from Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies went out to talk to customers about the company’s technology they were taken aback at what they heard, said Steve Down, general manager at Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies. “We thought we knew what the customer wanted but when we started talking to them and found out where the pain points were we were surprised,” he said. “It was around nervousness of where the technology is going.”

The company then decided to roll out modular locks that enable the end user to swap out from keypad, to mag stripe reader, smart card reader and even potentially a biometric reader sometime in the future, Down said. “It’s something that’s not bleeding edge but it makes customers happy,” he said.

VingCard Elsafe has announced that the Sheraton Grand Hotel & Spa in Edinburgh, Scotland has installed VingCard’s Signature RFID contactless locking solution.

Replacing the traditional magnetic stripe key card system, the new locks will enable guests to simply tap to enter their room using a contactless card or fob. The system can also be adapted to support NFC technology, allowing guests to used their NFC-enabled mobile phone to check in remotely and receive an encrypted room key through SMS. Guests can go straight to their room and tap the phone against the lock to gain entry.
