University of Iowa converts to electronic access system

The University of Iowa is converting all exterior doors on its more than 100 campus buildings from conventional key locks to electronic access systems, according to press-citizen.com.

Prior to the new electronic system, janitors were unlocking doors up to three hours ahead of schedule to have them all unlocked on time, creating many security concerns, say campus officials.

About a third of the campus’ buildings already have electronic access installed through an older system called Legacy or the new system being installed, called Symmetry Access Control System by AMAG Technology.

The AMAG system allows the campus to lock and unlock doors remotely in the event of an emergency, and thus limiting the burden on manpower. Authorities also can also detect remotely if an exterior door is left open, and determine who is in a building after hours.

GSA implements cloud-based physical access system

The General Services Administration (GSA) has implemented its first cloud-based physical access system at the Neal Smith Federal Building in Des Moines, Iowa.

The GSA contracted with BridgePoint Systems to utilize its TrustAlert Physical Access Control Systems. BridgePoint partnered with EmbarkIT to install the system, which replaced the GSA’s 10-year-old legacy system. The system leverages the GSA’s Kansas City, Missouri-based WAN and remote IT infrastructure, which allows the building to shrink its carbon footprint.
