A San Jose State University student brought an apparent glitch in the campus’ Career Center Web site to the attention when he discovered that logging in required only his student ID for the password, according to the Spartan Daily.

When visiting the site to log-in, the student read a message which instructed users to enter their student ID number as their log-in password. The Career Center’s Web site database holds an array of personal and confidential information, left by students.

Since being brought to the Career Center’s attention, the staff has revised protocols for new and existing users. An alert message on the Career Center log-in page has also been added to explain the revised log-in process.

All students with currently registered profiles were contacted via email, containing their new, automatically generated password for logging into the website.

New users will still use their student ID numbers to create accounts, and once a student profile is created, the system will automatically generate a password.

As more and more schools make the transition to smart cards, it’s easy to forget that some universities are quite happy with their mag-stripe cards. An article at Assa Abloy’s Future Lab Web site points out that some colleges have withstood moving to smart cards, either because it’s too expensive or students and faculty haven’t asked for them.

UGA police investigating fake ID operations

Just as the University of Georgia police were ending an investigation into a sophisticated fake ID ring, another student dealing in fake driver licenses came to light. The original ring, apparently run by students at the University of Georgia and Gainesville State College, had distributed more than 1,000 fake IDs to students at the two schools.

NuVision names executive VP

Campus card provider NuVision Networks, Napa, Calif., has named Brian Adoff as the company’s new executive vice president.

Adoff, formerly NuVision’s national sales manager, will now oversee company-wide operations and develop strategic partnerships.

A state audit found that personal and financial information for students considering attending the University of Maryland were stored on publicly accessible servers that could make students easy prey to ID thieves.
