UGA arrest made for blackmailing students

Tuesday, February 9, 2010 in News

University of Georgia police arrested its security analyst, Dorin Dehelean, on a felony extortion charge for trying to blackmail a student who was caught downloading music, reveals the Banner Herald.

Officials say that Dehelean called the student to let her know that she’d been caught downloading copyrighted material, a violation of university policy. He “offered to make the situation go away in exchange for money,” UGA police Chief Jimmy Williamson said.

Instead of paying, the student told Dehelean she didn’t have the money and reported him to an academic official, who then notified police.

A UGA officer dressed to impersonate the student and met with Dehelean, and police arrested him on one count of theft by extortion, a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

Officials believe there may have been more victims, and are working on finding them.
