Fake student IDs on campus

Are colleges and universities having an issue with students making fake campus IDs?

A recent report at the University of Flordia showed a problem but CR80News is wondering if others are seeing the same problems. Are students doing it for free public transportation? Free meals? What has been done to prevent students from faking student IDs?

Just as the University of Georgia police were ending an investigation into a sophisticated fake ID ring, another student dealing in fake driver licenses came to light. The original ring, apparently run by students at the University of Georgia and Gainesville State College, had distributed more than 1,000 fake IDs to students at the two schools.

Missouri State University has selected Blackboard Transact to implement a contactless student ID card. This enables the new system to integrate student identification, door security, commerce and campus payment into a single contactless card.

Obtaining fake IDs, such as driver licenses, is becoming harder for college students. Not only must they deal with local law enforcement, the Department of Homeland Security can also get involved.

The University of Arizona, Tucson, has rolled out a new campus card that includes contactless functionality. The new CatCard will be given to incoming students during student orientation and will be able to do the same things current CatCards can. However, existing students, if they want to upgrade, will have to fork over $25.

A 27-year-old man posing as a Harvard undergraduate student stayed in the dorms, ate in the school cafeteria and chatted with many Harvard students via Facebook before being found out by campus police. He was cited for trespassing and using a false identification card.

U.S. Bank and Oakland Community College, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., have launched a combined campus ID and prepaid MasterCard program for the school’s 78,000 students and 788 staff members.
