Texas Tech SGA install card readers to record senator hours

Tuesday, January 26, 2010

Texas Tech’s Student Government Association is implementing a card reader to track and enforce student senator office hours, reports The Daily Toreador.

The concept came as an idea from a fellow member of the association, seeing a similar system at the campus’ law library. Prior to entering, student senators will swipe their campus ID card to sign in. When they leave for the day they will do the same, swiping the card as they exit the room to sign out.

Suzanne Williams, President of the SGA, says the new system was a result of problems in the past when senators forgot to sign in during office hours and paperwork being thrown away or hard to find.

The card reader will be installed at the association’s conference room door, where it will be easy to access and noticeable to all who enter and exit.

Dolores Harper, managing director of the University ID Office, said the SGA asked her to install a card reader that would help keep track of senator’s office hours.

“It’s just a regular access reader,” Harper said. “They will swipe their cards to sign in and out, and the reader will keep a log.” [end]

The Ministry of Home Affairs in India’s government has decided to install biometric logical access controls on all its computers and has invited bids from companies to install 100 devices to accomplish this, according to an Express India article. While the primary purpose of installing the new technology is to stop unauthorized access to the agency’s computer systems, it is expected to record usage data of each authorized user as well.
