PSU hit in cyber attack

Penn State University computers were attacked, possibly by so-called cyber criminals, several days before Christmas, putting Social Security numbers of some 30,000 people at risk.

A spokesperson said the school is trying to determine whose Social Security numbers were exposed and would not say whether they belonged to faculty, staff, alumni or others.

“The Social Security numbers were in archived files that people didn’t realize were on their computers,” the spokesperson said.

Lockheed Martin, an aerospace engineering company, holds the U.S. government’s biggest military contract, and thus a security breach here, could have devastating effects on the federal government.

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) released a statement regarding an incident of unauthorized access to a campus computing server. The VCU server housed files with the personal information on more than 175,000 current and former faculty, staff, students and affiliates.
