Just say 'no' to emails requesting user names and passwords

That’s the word from Stanford’s Information Technology Services in response to phony emails that have been sent to students that seek their user name and password. The emails are similar to scammers seeking bank account numbers. For example, one email sent to Stanford students included the subject line “Webmail users maintenance notice,” and requested recipients to send their user email ID and password to the fictitious “email Management Team.”

Some fake messages use fear. One email that circulated on campus last summer carried the subject line “Warning Notice!!!” and asked recipients to send their SUNet ID and password to a phony “upgrade team” to avoid having their email accounts “terminated immediately.”

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is recommending the elimination of password usage in favor of biometrical recognition, reports Government Computer News.

DARPA said on its Active Authentication site that complex passwords are too cumbersome to create, remember and manage, nor do active sessions have the capability to recognize whether the current user is the one who was originally authenticated.

DigitalPersona announced the release of a new version of its Pro Enterprise software solution, version 5.2.

Among the aspects of the new version DigitalPersona is touting are the extensive number of factors a company utilizing the solution can use to authenticate for access to sensitive information or secured computer stations. These factors include what a user knows, such as PINs or passwords, things you have, such as smart cards, contactless identity cards or Bluetooth devices, and things you are, such as fingerprints.
