Drury University, Springfield, Mo., has added new card readers in four campus buildings to provide greater security as well as 24-hour access. Before installation of the readers, which began in May, students didn’t feel safe because some doors were often left open late at night.

Previously, students had to call security to gain admission. As one student said: “It’s nice because you don’t have to sit around waiting for security anymore. Sometimes when you can’t get in really late at night, it’s not exactly the safest thing if you are just standing there waiting by yourself.”

The General Services Administration (GSA) has implemented its first cloud-based physical access system at the Neal Smith Federal Building in Des Moines, Iowa.

The GSA contracted with BridgePoint Systems to utilize its TrustAlert Physical Access Control Systems. BridgePoint partnered with EmbarkIT to install the system, which replaced the GSA’s 10-year-old legacy system. The system leverages the GSA’s Kansas City, Missouri-based WAN and remote IT infrastructure, which allows the building to shrink its carbon footprint.

School attendance and tracking system issues student IDs, visitor passes

ID Card Group, an online retailer of ID card systems, is offering a school attendance tracking software system designed for the needs of mid- to large-sized educational institutions. The Teacher-In-a-Box Attendance Tracking Kit includes hardware, software and accessories.

Security cams installed at one Ohio University dorm

Seventeen surveillance cameras have been installed at a dorm at Ohio University with plans to equip the rest of the school’s dorms in the future. However, that could take 10 to 15 years, said one school official.

Illinois high school tests program to track bus riders

Stevenson High School, Lincolnshire, Ill., is piloting a program that can track students on school buses. The goal is to increase safety while determining more efficient bus routes. The school rolled out the program in late January that provides each student with a card that the student uses as he enters or exits a school bus.

Bear Pass rolls out at Missouri universitiy

Missouri State University in Springfield is rolling out its new Bear Pass, a student ID card that also provides door access and debit card functionality. The purpose behind the new card is to make the campus safer while keeping a student’s information secure, according to school officials.

Heartland signs up more colleges

Heartland Payment Systems Campus Solutions division has recruited 12 higher education districts and campuses totaling 20 different colleges to manage the schools’ financial aid disbursement services utilizing Heartland’s Acceluraid electronic disbursement product.
