Higher One adds first Rhode Island school

The University of Rhode Island, Kingston, has signed on with financial services provider Higher One to handle financial aid refunds due students. It’s the first institution in the state to go with the New Haven, Conn. company and means the school can eliminate the printing, processing and mailing of about 20,000 refund checks a year while providing students with quicker access to their funds. [end] 

AeroScout is working with Siemens Healthcare to deploy AeroScout’s real-time location system to help health care organizations improve operations and quality of care.

Most recently Siemens implemented AeroScout’s Temperature Monitoring solution across three of Lifespan’s hospitals in Rhode Island. Using its existing Wi-Fi network, Lifespan is monitoring and managing the temperature of hundreds of refrigerators that contain critical items, such as pharmaceuticals, blood, and research materials.

A high school in Tarpon Springs, Fla. recently sent out a mass email bearing student Social Security numbers. The school’s guidance counselor sent the email to Tarpon’s entire senior class of about 400 students and parents regarding the Bright Futures Scholarship program.

Brown University, Providence, R.I. is considering a plan to enable students to use Bear Buck accounts off campus. Bear Bucks, which replaced the school’s declining balance system this semester, is similar to a debit card but is currently only good campus-wide.

New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has begun piloting NFC-enabled mobile payments on the Long Island Rail Road, according to SmartPlanet.

The system, which enables riders to pay for fares with the tap of an NFC smart phone, is being tested by railroad employees equipped with Nokia phones. Later this spring 100 riders will be given NFC-enabled smart phones in a consumer trial.
