University establishes M-numbers for increased identity security

Students at Murray State University in Kentucky are having to adjust to a new student ID system that has eliminated the Social Security number as a student identifier. Like most schools, the Kentucky university is making the change to protect students’ privacy and guard against ID theft.

The new M-number is generated from the college’ s Banner system, an integrated software solution developed by Sungard Higher Education that many colleges and universities use to manage their business operations. The numbering change will affect food services, the bursar’s Office, housing and any other place where the student’s ID card had been used.
