Campus Cards, College and University Identification and Security

Hand scanners introduced at California university

Monday, March 30, 2009

University of California at Irvine students will now be able to enter their recreation center with a simple swipe of their hand in place of their student ID card. The new system will aid students who might have forgotten their campus card. Students must also enter a PIN as well.

The biometric scanners are also expected to reduce or eliminate the illegitimate use of IDs, which occurs when students allow their cards to be borrowed. Besides student convenience, the scanners are expected to reduce the amount of time recreation center staff have to deal with swiping in guests since the scanners are operated entirely by the user.

Two other California schools, Cal State Fullerton and Cal State San Bernardino, recently implemented biometric access systems in their new recreation centers.
