Just when a college thinks it has eliminated the ubiquitous Social Security number as a student identifier, those persistent nine digits have a nasty habit of cropping up again. Case in point is a community college in Binghamton, N.Y. that eliminated the social five years ago. Yet, in a recent mailing of its quarterly alumni magazine, the social was printed on the back cover of as many as 14,000 publications.

Broome Community College abandoned the use of Social Security numbers as student identification numbers in 2004, but the office of alumni affairs was utilizing a new system that used the old student identification numbers to verify addresses. The school has now crafted a new method to verify addresses.

Higher One has partnered with Saint Charles Community College to help electronically distribute Financial Aid and other refund disbursements to students.

With the new system, Saint Charles students log on to a secure Web site and choose how they wish to receive their refund in either a direct deposit to the OneAccount or an automated transfer to a bank account of their choice.

Automated library service exposes student and faculty personal data

The College Center for Library Automation in Tallahassee sent out notices about a software upgrade that may have left about 30,000 students, faculty and staff Social Security numbers and other private data vulnerable for theft, according to a local news article.

Tulsa CC goes green with refund disbursements

Tulsa Community College in Oklahoma has teamed with Higher One to make the switch from paper check refunds to electronically distribute Financial Aid and other refund disbursements to students.

UConn breach results in theft of private information

An UConn computer with the names and Social Security Numbers of more than 10,000 university applicants was stolen, according to a local news report.

The computer, stolen from an IT storage cabinet at university’s West Hartford campus, had applicant files ranging from 2004 through July 30. UConn officials are still investigating the theft, which was discovered on Aug. 3.

UH security breach affects SSNs and credit cards

University of Hawaii officials made an announcement that a hacker was able to breach the security of a parking office server, which contained the personal information of some 53,000 people, according to the Honolulu Star Advertiser.
