New Jersey seeks to regulate on-campus credit card solicitations

A New Jersey state senator has introduced a bill that would regulate credit card solicitations on college campuses, including requiring issuers to register with the institution and, if allowed to solicit, to also offer educational programs on the responsible use of credit cards.

The bill would also prohibit credit card companies from using so-called promotional gimmicks to get students to sign up, from issuing a credit card to a student without a certificate that the student completed the credit education course and from purchasing or otherwise obtaining the names and addresses of enrolled students from the college. The bill has already been approved by one committee.
