Boosting team spirit with a discount card

Wednesday, November 19, 2008

The University of Missouri at St. Louis is offering its students a so-called “smart card,” a discount card they buy for $5 which can save them money at one of the 18 local business sponsors. Money generated from the program will go to support the school’s athletics department.

“One of the main things we came up with in Athletics is we had to try to find a way to get the student involved; to not only come out to the games, but also to use some of the vendors that are spending their money with athletics,” said a school spokesperson.

For example, students can receive a 10% discount at Penn Station and also get a free soda, while at one McDonald’s, smart card owners can buy one sandwich and get another free.
