Episode 22: Government ID event hits DC as FIPS 201 deadline and Presidential election approach

The annual Smart Cards in Government conference will take place just a few days before the ominous October 27 PIV issuance deadline and just weeks before the Presidential election that is likely to impact many of the identification initiatives at the federal level. Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the Smart Card Alliance, talks with re:ID host Chris Corum about the event scheduled for October 22-24 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, D.C.

The General Services Administration is seeking information from vendors relating to Personal Identity Verification (PIV) services.

The GSA wants to review different PIV scenarios for 2011 and beyond. This includes government furnished systems managed by an integration contractor, government-owned and operated services, contractor-owned-and-operated services, or some combination of the three.

Government issued ID cards aren’t what they use to be. In the last 10-years the documents have changed from simple piece of laminated plastic to high-tech IDs with multiple security features.
