facecard prepaid MasterCard to launch financial literacy campaign

Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Beginning with the opening football game–Aug. 30 at many college campuses–representatives from facecard, a prepaid debit MasterCard, will be at 50 schools to trumpet their national campaign designed to educate students and their parents about financial literacy. The company also provides resources to help college students avoid so-called financial pitfalls.

These representatives will be distributing information on how to stay financially literate this school year. The move is part of an effort by facecard to encourage students learn how to do more with their finances.

“College students are failing financial literacy tests at alarming rates, yet nearly 60% of them manage to graduate college with four or more credit cards,” said Ed Braswell, CEO and chairman of facecard’s parent company edo Interactive. “With a few simple tools, we can equip these students to make wise financial decisions allowing them to graduate with a leg up not a step behind.”

Fans will be given a publication created by facecard entitled “Get Smart. Get More,” which deals with budgeting, how to bank efficiently and how to avoid ID theft.

“As the next generation of our economy, it is vital that Millennials have a basic understanding of how to manage their wallets,” said Braswell. [end]

Datamonitor analyst Giles Ubaghs says, “NatWest’s move away from its joint venture with O2 is likely due to the wider difficulties with government-owned RBS. With austerity becoming a growing concern in the public sector, NatWest’s focus on its core services is perhaps unsurprising.”
