Oklahoma City Community College is doubling the number of cameras on campus and is giving its security officers ID scanners, all aimed at beefing up security at the school. The college is under surveillance by 42 cameras, located both inside and out, but another 40 cameras are being installed between the summer and fall semester.

The majority of the cameras will be situated inside the college, but a small number will be installed outside of the building to ensure the OCCC parking lot is under complete surveillance. More than $100,000 will be spent on the new technology.

The ID scanners will be installed in the school’s two patrol vehicles and another in the Safety and Security office. The scanners are designed to help campus security ensure that anyone walking on campus late at night is either an OCCC student or faculty member.

“It seems to me that the college has taken all the necessary precautions to protect the students,” commented one student.

Every year since 1998 Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List. Created by Beloit’s own Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and former Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it was created as a reminder to faculty of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation. Most students entering college for the first time this fall - the Class of 2014 - were born in 1992.
