Gonzaga University trials phone-based payments on campus and around town

College students can be ideal test subjects for new technology, particularly if it’s “cool.” While programs testing near field communication are cropping up worldwide, until now the use of cell phones as a payment mechanism has rarely included colleges. Even though one or two universities have started to use contactless tags attached to cell phones, until Gonzaga University jumped into NFC earlier this year, this technology wasn’t evident among collegians.

Beloit College reminds students, faculty and 'you' of the changing times

Every year since 1998 Beloit College has released the Beloit College Mindset List. Created by Beloit’s own Keefer Professor of the Humanities Tom McBride and former Public Affairs Director Ron Nief, it was created as a reminder to faculty of dated references, and quickly became a catalog of the rapidly changing worldview of each new generation. The College Center for Library Automation in Tallahassee sent out notices about a software upgrade that may have left about 30,000 students, faculty and staff Social Security numbers and other private data vulnerable for theft, according to a local news article.

St. John’s College in Annapolis, Maryland is launching a new multi-function campus ID program in time for the start of the fall 2010 semester with the help of CardSmith. The new St. John’s College 1Card will provide payment and privilege control to campus services and locations including the dining hall, coffee shop, bookstore, library, and laundry facilities. Students will have 24/7 online account access and web value transfer services.

Arizona college gears up for improved refund disbursements

Northland Pioneer College in Holbrook, Arizona has selected Higher One to help electronically distribute Financial Aid and scholarship refund disbursements to students.

Currently, students can only receive their refunds by a paper check, which means administrations spend long hours printing, stuffing, and organizing checks while students wait even longer to receive them.

Tulsa CC goes green with refund disbursements

Tulsa Community College in Oklahoma has teamed with Higher One to make the switch from paper check refunds to electronically distribute Financial Aid and other refund disbursements to students.
