Campus ID provider Blackboard introduces mass-notification, video surveillance products

On-campus student safety is an even greater priority for many colleges and universities today. Blackboard, one of the largest campus ID systems providers, has noticed this trend and rolled out two new programs with student safety in mind.

The first program, Blackboard Connect, enables a campus administrator to log into just one system to send mass-notification alerts to the entire campus. The second, Blackboard Video Surveillance, enables the administrator to view live or recorded videos of multiple locations at once. Finally, the system will let administrators check transactions and finances at all the college’s various facilities.

HID Global has announced the successful completion of the world’s first university pilot of NFC smart phones carrying digital keys.

First announced in September, the pilot involved a select group of students and staff at Arizona State University using NFC-enabled smart phones equipped with HID’s Secure Identity Object (SIO) Technology. Participants could gain access to their residence halls and other secure access areas by tapping their handset against a reader embedded in the door and entering a PIN, rather than use their plastic campus card.

When Blackboard deploys Sony’s FeliCa contactless smart cards, the credentials have two areas, one that is a secure area where payment and physical access control transactions take place and an open area where the school can add its own applications, says Jun Shionozaki, technical consulting manager, FeliCa Business Division at Sony.

Seventeen surveillance cameras have been installed at a dorm at Ohio University with plans to equip the rest of the school’s dorms in the future. However, that could take 10 to 15 years, said one school official.

More than a million users have chosen the latest release of Blackboard Connect 5 for their mass notification service needs.

According to Blackboard, after just 90 days in the marketplace the service now serves clients in the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom. More than 200 school districts, higher education institutions and local governments have signed on.

Boston-based Revosys has announced that it will implement NFC payment processing in its upcoming “Interactive V5 In-Taxi” advertising system.

According to Revosys, the upgraded Interactive V5 will allow passengers to pay for fares with NFC-enabled mobile phones, contactless credit and debit cards, and traditional magnetic stripe cards.

Returning students to Biola University, a private Christian university in Southern California, were all issued new campus ID cards to support the switch to a new system run by Blackboard, according to Biola’s student newspaper.
