“Software as a service” model takes off

Colleges and universities aren’t that different from corporations. Educational institutions are under the same pressure to keep costs down, and anything that can be done to help institutions save money piques their interest.

That’s one of the big selling points of a relatively new concept called software as a service, or SaaS for short. Many may know it by its precursor: application service provider, or ASP.

Digital Identification Solutions announced it has received purchase orders from three separate driver license programs.

The first of the orders is from L-1 Identity Solutions for the State of Kentucky, and another is from 3M for the State of Arkansas. Furthermore, the State of South Carolina, a customer for several years, has also decided to extend its current install base.

LaserCard Corp. has received a purchase order to supply additional optical security media cards for Italy’s Citizen ID Card program, known as the Carta d’Identità Elettronica or CIE, to be delivered by November 2010 at a value of $550,000. The ID cards are used by citizens for identification and travel.

Following the closing down of companies trying to operate privately-run biometric security checkpoints in airports designed to increase the speed and ease with which regular travelers move through the airport, two airports are expecting new and similar programs, according to a New York Times article.

LaserCard Corp. has received a follow-on purchase order valued at $1.6 million for chip-ready, optical security media-based credentials for the Saudi Arabia national ID card program. Delivery is scheduled to occur in the company’s second fiscal quarter ending September 2010.
