CR80News’ 2005 study suggests uptake in campus card banking partnerships

Two years ago, CR80News conducted a quantitative survey of campus card banking partnerships in an attempt to put some numbers to trend . Our editors surveyed seven financial institutions that were determined to be actively involved in the market, offering banking services via the campus ID card. This month we endeavored to update this survey to provide a current picture of the market and investigate whether this often-discussed application is on the rise or decline.

HID completes NFC key pilot at ASU

HID Global has announced the successful completion of the world’s first university pilot of NFC smart phones carrying digital keys.

First announced in September, the pilot involved a select group of students and staff at Arizona State University using NFC-enabled smart phones equipped with HID’s Secure Identity Object (SIO) Technology. Participants could gain access to their residence halls and other secure access areas by tapping their handset against a reader embedded in the door and entering a PIN, rather than use their plastic campus card.

Maine college's OneCard goes off campus

The OneCard from Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, can now be used at three off-campus restaurants with more merchants set to join.

“It’s a project we’ve been working on for some time now and its finally coming to fruition,” said OneCard Coordinator Chris Bird.

Campus card provider NuVision Networks, Napa, Calif., has named Brian Adoff as the company’s new executive vice president.

Adoff, formerly NuVision’s national sales manager, will now oversee company-wide operations and develop strategic partnerships.

Lake Superior launches new campus ID program

Lake Superior College (LSC) in Duluth, Minn. has launched a new official campus ID dubbed the LSCPlus Card, an all-in-one swipeable card for students.

The LSCPlus Card will work similar to a debit card, storing any remaining student loan balances and work study, student employment payments. The new cards will also be used for access to campus services and functions, granting students’ library privileges, and a free Duluth Transit Authority (DTA) bus pass.

Fox News Business has taken a look at university IDs that also double as prepaid cards. Fox dubs the prepaid aspect as “the latest twist on a long tradition of college campus ID cards serving a dual financial purpose.”
