At the recent National Association of Campus Card Users conference in Orlando, I spoke with several bankers and a number of campus administrators about credit cards. Though far from a scientific study, the conversations suggest to me that the issue of campus cards and credit may be heating up again. In the late 90’s, during the heyday of the affinity credit card expansion, issuers were racing to ink deals with like-minded groups providing cards to group-members that suggested and ‘supported’ the group’s mission. From sports teams to hobbyists, everything was fair game. And college alumni organizations were among the most sought-after categories.

UConn breach results in theft of private information

An UConn computer with the names and Social Security Numbers of more than 10,000 university applicants was stolen, according to a local news report.

The computer, stolen from an IT storage cabinet at university’s West Hartford campus, had applicant files ranging from 2004 through July 30. UConn officials are still investigating the theft, which was discovered on Aug. 3.

Colleges enable campus IDs for ATM debit transactions, California

Students at UC Davis and California State University, Sacramento now have the ability to link their campus ID cards to US Bank and Wells Fargo, respectively, according to the Sacramento Bee.

PNC provides banking services to Grove City College students and staff

Grove City College, Pa, and PNC Bank have formed a relationship to give personal banking products and services to more than 2,900 students, faculty and staff.

Loyola expands campus card program

Loyola University, Chicago, is offering more buying power for its students through the campus card program, allowing them for the first time to take the card off-campus at local dining establishments. The program will start small, focusing on a handful of restaurants.

E. Africa university adopts software system to manage activities

Kyambogo University, located in Uganda, has introduced smart cards for students and developed a software suite that will organize and track all campus activities, according to the Daily Monitor.

Lebanese University makes way to campus card use

Holy Spirit University of Kaslik, Lebanon has completed the first phase of a major project to issue students multi-functional student ID cards, according to a local news source.
