Card size specifications: When does card size matter?

When you open your wallet you likely see a number of plastic cards that are all precisely the same size. Obviously, you say to yourself, ID card sizes have been standardized. Why then need we concern ourselves with this issue? Outside of intellectual curiosity, it is important to understand card sizing in case you are asked to produce a different sized card for a specific need in the future. You also need to understand the capabilities of the equipment you are purchasing.

NFC software provider Sequent Software has joined GlobalPlatform as an Observer Member.

Sequent’s membership enables it to contribute to specifications that ensure the interoperability of secure contactless services. The company, which provides a neutral software and services platform for the developing NFC market, plans to participate in the formation of business requirements and the development of best practices in different industry sectors, according to GP.

HID Global announced the debut of two new Glass Tag Ultra RFID transponders for animal identification and industrial applications.

The HID Global design featured in the Glass Tag Ultra 134.2 kHz transponders use direct bonding technology and optimized chip placement to enable a boost of performance. Read ranges are improved by up to 35% compared to low frequency glass tags of the similar size.

Multicard announced that it has developed and implemented a standardized concealed carry handgun permit for Colorado’s county sheriffs’ association. Multicard designed and produced the secure, pre-printed identification card to be used statewide.

Barclaycard launched a new stick-on credit card application that will enable millions of its Visa cardholders to make wave-and-pay purchases using their mobile phone.

A third of the size of a normal card, Barclaycard PayTag can be stuck to the back of any mobile phone. Once attached, it can be used to make payments of £15 and under, rising to £20 in June, by simply being held over a contactless payment terminal.

Smart Packaging Solutions (SPS) announced it is ready to deliver its to smart card products to manufacturers in China.

This, following the Chinese Government, along with People’s Bank of China (PBOC) confirmation that all banking cards in China would use smart card technologies by 2015. PBOC has already published the specification for these cards, called PBOC 2.0, which includes the certification scheme.

The NFC Forum has appointed TÜV SÜD Product Service to provide its Radio Frequency (RF) Analogue Test Tool Validation Service.

TÜV SÜD, a global provider of product testing and certification, will validate all RF Analogue test tools used as part of the NFC Forum Certification Program for testing the RF Layer of the communications stack to prove conformance to the NFC Forum specifications.
